Introduction
“Eco” - organisms in relation to their environment
“Oasis” – a renewable, life sustaining environment
An Oasis is being born in Northern Nevada’s Freeway and Rail development corridor. This is no traditional oasis beaconing weary travelers with the promise of a respite from the toil of adverse travel. GEOVADA will bring to life a verdant array of renewable energy applications within a state of the art sustainable commercial and residential community creating an “ECOASIS”.
ECOASIS’ mission is to provide through its three component programs access to and information about renewable energy and sustainable development at GEOVADA for:
- Public education (E-Center)
- Field campus facilities (E-Campus)
- Startup businesses (E-Launch)
E-Center
Renewable Energy & Sustainable Development Education Center
While “renewable energy” and “sustainable development” have become household phrases in today’s world, there is little opportunity for the general public to witness the applications of these practices firsthand given that they are being undertaken in areas with limited public access. At GEOVADA, however, numerous state of the art renewable energy projects are being planned within an environment of new LEED and LID certified commercial and residential development proximate to the I-80 Freeway. This presents the opportunity for ECOASIS, as GEOVADA’s nonprofit outreach component, to provide a broad based program of public education about renewable energy and sustainable development both at ECOASIS’ Education Center sited at the freeway exit to ValPark and guided tours within GEOVADA.
E-Campus
Renewable Energy & Sustainable Development Academic Campus
Much of the renewable energy and sustainable development projects and practices to be employed at GEOVADA are within the province of academic disciplines. Like the general public, academic institutions lack and could significantly benefit from access to private sector developments where these projects and practices are taking place. Additionally, the private sector, and in this case GEOVADA, could also benefit substantially from the presence of academia on site. Some manifestations of interaction with academia at GEOVADA include opportunities for participation in:
- the formulation and conducting of ECOASIS’ public education programs
- agricultural projects utilizing geothermal heat to enhance growth of plants and fish including algae for biofuels
- technology transfers and other forms of assistance to Enterprise businesses within E-Launch
Facilities for E-Campus operations will be made available within the Education Center at the I-80 exit and the Enterprise Park at E-Launch.
E-Launch
Renewable Energy & Sustainable Development Enterprise Park
Much of today’s renewable and sustainable technology is developed by so-called “startup” businesses. ECOASIS’ E-Launch program is designed to provide a home for select startups at a designated 50 acre Enterprise Park within GEOVADA’s industrial component (ValPark). Each such business will receive an improved parcel of land within the Park upon which to locate and which can be used by the business as collateral for financing operations or other fiscal needs. Academic institutions participating in the E-Campus program will be available to offer Enterprise businesses technology transfers, staffing for skilled positions and many other forms of assistance. When a business outgrows its home in the Enterprise Park, special concessions will be available to ease its transition to a new and permanent location within ValPark.
